I analyzed two articles about the recent
engagement of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The first, was an article done by
NBC News and was about the racism of lineage in the royal family. It talks
about the political backlash of how Markle is biracial. The other, was from the
today show and was about the engagement in general. We are able to see on
the NBC how they focus on the negative and of Britains racism rather than focus
on the positive of the actual engagement. The Today Show’s usage of the
words plan, and expected has a negative connotation because it shows how they
might not happen at all. These words imply that the marriage might not
happen at all. The NBC article does not use any of these words and talks as if
it is definite and going to happen for sure. "Harry last year took the
highly unusual step of asking the media to stop the “wave of abuse and
harassment” against Markle." This was from the NBC article, and the usage
of the words 'highly unusual' implies that sticking up for your fiance is something
that doesn't normally happen. It also implies that it is normal and ok for
people to criticize others and expect no backlash. The usage of the words
"counter to traditional royal behavior" in
the Today article implies that it is bad to break tradition when they add the
word counter. The word counter has a negative connotation and implies
that if you go against the norm or what people consider the norm you are doing
it wrong. "Akpan and Brinkhurst-Cuff
both don't hold out much hope that Markle could significantly impact Britain’s
race issues." This was an example from the NBC article and is about how
people think Markle is not fit for this roll because of her race. This is ridiculous. They use the words "don't hold out much hope" and imply there is
none at all.
