Do Sales Actually Save You Money?

When you go to the mall, you are bombarded with advertisements and companies saying they save you more money. And of course, you think that all of these sales will actually save you money. But in reality I don't think they actually do. Take Bath and Body Works for example. They sell things like, buy three get three free. This is crazy, who would need three bottles of lotion anyway? Let alone six. We trick ourselves into thinking we need things when we really don't. Companies do a great job at this, they tell us that we would be able to save money on things. We, the consumers, convince ourselves we need that thing/things and buy it. And when the deal is done, realize we bought too much or in reality didn't need that product in the first place. We don't usually realize we don't need the product. Instead we pat ourselves on the back and tell ourselves we made a great deal today. I have also made this mistake many times, always forgetting that the company doesn't have my best interests in mind when selling a product.

  1. I feel this way too. When I go to the mall to run in and buy some jeans, I almost always get distracted by the signs promising me better deals. They trick you into feeling that you've outsmarted them, and you've saved your money when really you've just spent more than you needed too. Everyone goes home happy. A terrible system, but consumers are so caught up in it all that they don't even notice.

  2. This type of advertising definitely tricks me into buying much more than I actually need; on Black Friday, I was obsessed with taking advantage of deals I thought would not happen for another year, and as a result I bought many items I would not have otherwise thought to be necessary. The deals I thought were hours long turned out to be weeks long, and the things that came in the mail were not as attractive as they were when they said "50% off." This is how many Americans shop; because our society promotes gluttony and greed as opposed to being "smart" with our money, many people are tricked into purchasing things under the false pretenses.
